For the information of the newer members of the medical community, the Kent Medical Foundation is a charitable trust founded by the Kent Medical Society in 1961. It was incorporated in 1966 and gives financial assistance to students who are residents of Kent and bordering counties and are pursuing careers in medicine and the allied health sciences. It is directed by a twelve member board of trustees (seven physicians and five lay persons). The seven physician members are elected by the Kent County Medical Society. It is supported primarily through contributions from area physicians, their families, and interested citizens of the community. It has given 658 grants totaling $258,584.50 to 562 students attending local colleges and the hospital/college nursing programs. In addition to the grants, it has made loans totaling $691,889.26 to 151 medical students from this area. More than half of the 134 loan recipients who have repaid their loans and are in practice, have remained in Michigan. Forty-one (41) are currently practicing in Grand Rapids. Tuition grants to nursing students and medical student loans will be made available for the 1999-2000 academic year. The trustees elected to continue giving a $500.00 grant in recognition of meritorious achievement to a graduating student at each of the five area colleges and university. This will be the 13th year of this activity. The grants are to apply to students who will be continuing in health science careers following graduation. The grants are to apply to education expenses and they must be enrolled in a qualifying course of study. This assistance is made possible to a great extent through the support given to the Foundation's Century Club by members of the medical profession, memorial contributions, and by the Kent County Medical Society Alliance programs. The Alliance's efforts have contributed a total of $90,988.88 to the work of the Foundation. The grateful appreciation of the trustees is extended to all who have contributed to the Foundation's accomplishments. Their continued and needed support is requested. Please call the foundation office (458-4157) if there are questions concerning its programs and activities.
